Kea or Tzia

The Greek island of Kea or Tzia is known for many things. It has exceptional beaches and one of the best system of walking paths and trails of any Greek island.

Kea is a hiker's paradise with numbered routes that take you through a variety of landcapes to remote coves and the ruins of ancient cities.

The island in itself is a charming little paradise and it is still a very genuine place to visit.

There are a few taverns and cafes, and the pace is slow and comfortable. Kea is an excellent alternative for those who want to get away from the busier islands, but still don't want the total quiet

Kea is a small island in the Cyclades that got known to the modern world when Titanic's sister ship Britannica sunk here in 1916 a favourite destination for diving enthusiasts.

Jacques Yves Cousteau’s team explored it in 1975 but, to now, few divers have approached the wreck, located at a depth of 120m, even though it’s considered one of the most significant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean, and of all time. On the reef of Koundourou, there’s another sunken ship: the steamer Patris that went down in 1868.

At the highest point of the village, on the site of the ancient acropolis, is a quarter known as Kastro which commands a breathtaking view of the nearby islands off the coast of Attica.

Not far from here is the famous "Lion of Kea" (6th century BC), hewn out of the slate.
The Archaeological Museum in Hora contains interesting finds dating from the Cycladic period.

The interior of the island is dotted with miniature chapels, windmills and monasteries, including that of Our Lady Kastriani, Kea's patron Saint. Easilly accessible from Athens, Kea offers those who are seeking a restful holiday clean, uncrowded beaches at PissesKorissiaKoundouros,Otzia bay and Poles bay. Here they can enjoy delicious fresh fish at picturesque little tavernas.
